A Covert Affair book

A Covert Affair book. A Covert Affair chronicles their friendship with a brilliant and eccentric array of OSS agents, including Jane Foster, a wealthy, free-spirited artist, and Elizabeth MacDonald, an adventurous young reporter. Although Paul and Julia Child both worked for the OSS (which was the WWII precursor of the CIA), this book tries extremely hard to tie their story into the one the author really wants to write (the sage of Jane Foster) in ways that are as tenuous now as they were when McCarthy's investigators attempted the same feat.

A covert affair: Julia Child and Paul Child in the OSS, Jennet . Within weeks of their arrival in Germany, Julia and Paul had picked up on the atmosphere of distrust and unease.

Paul’s Foreign Service salary enabled them to live well, especially as the dollar was strong against the mark. Whenever possible, they fled across the river to Bonn, a picturesque university town that had been occupied by American troops toward the end of the war and had somehow managed to survive relatively unscathed, its medieval battlements and grand boulevards still redolent of Old World charm.

Thus in Jennet Conant’s new book, A Covert Affair: Julia Child and Paul Child . When he arrived in Ceylon, Paul Child considered Julia McWilliams a comforting friend but really a grown-up little girl.

Thus in Jennet Conant’s new book, A Covert Affair: Julia Child and Paul Child in the OSS, most of the adventures are Foster’s. Paul Child and Julia McWilliams, both wartime members of the . based in Ceylon and then Kunming, were among the amused audience watching Foster’s dramas - until they were briefly baffled participants. This is the fourth book in which Conant has explored a largely overlooked wartime community.

By bestselling author Jennet Conant, a stunning account of Julia Child’s early life as a member of the OSS in the Far East during World War II, and the tumultuous years when she and Paul Child were caught up in the McCarthy witch hunt and behaved with bravery and honor.Bestselling author Jennet Conant brings us a stunning account of Julia and Paul Child’s experiences as members of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in the Far East during World War II and the tumultuous years when they were caught up in the McCarthy Red spy hunt in the 1950s and behaved with bravery and honor. It is the fascinating portrait of a group of idealistic men and women who were recruited by the citizen spy service, slapped into uniform, and dispatched to wage political warfare in remote outposts in Ceylon, India, and China. The eager, inexperienced 6 foot 2 inch Julia springs to life in these pages, a gangly golf-playing California girl who had never been farther abroad than Tijuana. Single and thirty years old when she joined the staff of Colonel William Donovan, Julia volunteered to be part of the OSS’s ambitious mission to develop a secret intelligence network across Southeast Asia. Her first post took her to the mountaintop idyll of Kandy, the headquarters of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, the supreme commander of combined operations. Julia reveled in the glamour and intrigue of her overseas assignment and lifealtering romance with the much older and more sophisticated Paul Child, who took her on trips into the jungle, introduced her to the joys of curry, and insisted on educating both her mind and palate. A painter drafted to build war rooms, Paul was a colorful, complex personality. Conant uses extracts from his letters in which his sharp eye and droll wit capture the day-to-day confusion, excitement, and improbability of being part of a cloak- and-dagger operation. When Julia and Paul were transferred to Kunming, a rugged outpost at the foot of the Burma Road, they witnessed the chaotic end of the war in China and the beginnings of the Communist revolution that would shake the world. A Covert Affair chronicles their friendship with a brilliant and eccentric array of OSS agents, including Jane Foster, a wealthy, free-spirited artist, and Elizabeth MacDonald, an adventurous young reporter. In Paris after the war, Julia and Paul remained close to their intelligence colleagues as they struggled to start new lives, only to find themselves drawn into a far more terrifying spy drama. Relying on recently unclassified OSS and FBI documents, as well as previously unpublished letters and diaries, Conant vividly depicts a dangerous time in American history, when those who served their country suddenly found themselves called to account for their unpopular opinions and personal relationships.

I don't like being misled. The title definitely catches your eye, and if you're a fan of Julia Child you are anticipating a book about her and some sort of covert activities she had in the OSS. I kept slogging through it, anticipating the story of Julia and Paul's relationship, and then became aware that it's more about their acquaintance, Jane. I thought the book was a big let down as it was written is such a choppy fashion that I had to keep going back and re-reading parts of it in order to remember some detail the author mentioned. I just finished reading "The Billion Dollar Spy" and that author was excellent in keeping the reader up to date on who is who in the story. Also, including a map of the area covered in the story would have been emensely helpful to readers not familiar with the locations she mentions. When writing about history, especially history that covers territorial areas, sketches and maps are critical so the reader can more easily follow along. For history buffs like myself, I have to say this isn't a comfortable book to read.

A very interesting book about Julia and Paul Child, their time in the OSS, and the circle of people around them. It highlights their work in China and other places during WWII, as well as Paul's work for the gov't after the war. A large, the majority of the book, concerns the people they worked with and knew during and after the war, the accusations of being spies for the Russians and Communist sympathizers. The fear of McCarthyism and its role in post war America is also on full display in this book and shows what politicians were capable of then, and in some ways today.

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed Jennet Conant's other books, especially "Tuxedo Park", but "A Covert Affair" was hugely disappointing. As other readers have noted, the book is really much more about Jane Foster and her involvement with communists than it is about Paul and Julia Child (of whom the first 170 pages of the book mention only in passing). The book is, however, quite revealing of the disgusting McCarthy era of character assassinations in the U.S...."Have you now, or have you ever been a Communist?"....when many liberals in the U.S. were unfairly tarred with the Communist brush. Now, of course, we have conservatives in the U.S. being called vile names by the liberals. As for all the mushy correspondence between Paul and Julia, reading it made me gag.

Jennet Conant is a very good writer and this book is reasonably well done. What is disappointing is that she, her publisher, and many of the public reviews and promotions seem totally unphased by the fact that it's being presented as something it's really not. I spent most of the time I read it hoping it would be about what it said it was about (Julia and Paul Child) and much of the rest of the time angry with Charlie Rose (whom I really admire) for doing a piece on it that passed it off as about Julia and Paul........ enough so that I bought it.

I know the idea is to sell books, but this deception is so blatant as to be mind-boggling. If I could get my money back I'd try. Not that the book was bad, it wasn't. It was more like ordering a steak and being served a hotdog. The hotdog wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I ordered. No self-respecting restaurant would do that on purpose.

This book was recommended by a co-worker. It jumped around too much for me, I just got tired of trying to keep up with wherever the author had jumped to on a particular page. Too time-consuming for entertainment.

it's an interesting book. i've read about half and very few references to julia child. so far it's mostly about someone named jane foster.

The title of this book does not really - in my opinion - reflect the actual content. The title is A Covert Affair: Julia Child and Paul Child in the OSS and the picture has a young version of Julia and Paul. The book really seems to be mostly about Jane Foster, a friend and co-worker in the OSS. Very little is really told about Paul and Julia. In the course of telling the story of Jane Foster - of course - Paul and Julia are written about but the cover and title makes it look like they are the lead characters but this is not the case. Disappointing. The book was a good read and gave a great view of the McCarthy era. I just wanted it to be about this fascinating couple. I am glad I read it.
It's really the story of a cousin, Jane Foster, and disturbingly based on her diaries and memoir. How much of this book is original? It feels plagiarized or concocted. Far better to read An Un-American Lady by Jane Foster, the original. But you won't find Julia Child in it. Jane Foster is far more interesting, anyway.
