Home Browse Books Book details, William Wallace. William Wallace has always been one of the legendary figures of Scottish history. In 1986 I wrote that William Wallace was 'at best a shadowy figure and likely to remain so'. Wallace was by no means prepared by birth, education or training for the seminal role he was to play in Scottish history, but when the ambition and ruthlessness of Edward I combined with the weakness of John Balliol to provoke the Wars of Independence, it was Wallace who rose to the challenge and broke the sequence of English victories, re-energising and inspiring.

William Wallace - Andrew Fisher. William’s relationship with Andrew Murray¹⁸ appears to support the view that in 1297 he was in his prime, perhaps of an age with Bruce.

William Wallace - Andrew Fisher. Murray was himself a young man when he and William joined forces, and he came of a family which was a major vassal of the Scottish Crown. He and William had, it would appear, nothing in common, the one the heir to a great and honourable inheritance, his new colleague at worst an outlaw.

By no means prepared by birth, education or training for leadership, Wallace nevertheless rose to prominence during the Wars of Independence, leading forces which broke the sequence of English victories and re-energising and inspiring his countrymen in the process. While others, ostensibly his betters, yielded and collaborated, Wallace set an example of constancy and perseverance and became the Guardian of Scotland. Even his terrible death in London in 1305 can be seen as a victory as it provided inspiration for the continuance of the struggle against English domination.

Love this book. Very unbiased and thoroughly researched.

Excellent read - very much a scholarly type of book, so if you are looking for Braveheart, go elsewhere. If you want a very good look at his origins and the period, and all that is actually known about him, this is a great resource.

A fine collection of pretty much everything known about the historical Sir William Wallace, organized like a biography. I would recommend this book for someone who, like me, loves to read about and research the history of their Scottish ancestors, or who is seeking to read about the real man behind 'Braveheart'.

Direct and to the point. Lacking in fluff, a good attribute.

Appropriate for those seeking acquaintance with Wallace.

Enjoyed the length of the tome.

I'm glad I read it, but I was left in want... I guess that it was not the author's fault. I came to realization that there just isn't a lot of information on William Wallace. Most of his life and personality will be forever lost to history.

However the author did do a great job of explaining the times, circumstances and history of Wallace's era.
More like a history book. Not that good a book to read. Way too many details and quotes that seemed to sideline the reader from the story of William Wallace. Finally just gave up on it and didn't finish reading.
