The year 1848, Mr. Senior had spent very little time in France. His autumnal wanderings had generally been confined to Germany and Switzerland. It was not until September, 1847, that he for the first time crossed the Alps, visited Turin, Genoa, and Venice, and on his return spent a fortnight in Paris. In the following February the Monarchy, which had appeared in the preceding autumn to be peacefully established, fell with a sudden shock which was felt throughout Europe.

Nassau William Senior. The liberty of the press is destroyed to an extent unheard of even in the time of the empire. Most of the journals are suppressed, those which appear cannot say a word on politics or even publish any news. But this is by no means all.
