Brol
This may not be the most detailed bio of Wilde available, but it is the only one by a friend and editor who actually knew the man from his arrival in London to his sad death in France in 1900. Frank Harris was there for all of Wilde's successes and failures. He arranged money and a coach to take Wilde to France to avoid the English prosecution. Wilde never showed up. Harris got Wilde money to write new plays after his release from Reading Gaol. Wilde took the money but did no writing. When Wilde's body was disinterred Harris was there, the last to look on his late friend's face.

Harris' assessment of Wilde the poet and of the talent of Alfred Douglas are also extremely interesting and thought provoking.

I got the free ebook version and it does not have footnotes - I don't know if the other version of volume 1 does, but volume 2 did.
This was fascinating reading.
Harris knew Wilde during his lifetime and they were friends. Harris clearly has some of the prejudices of the time regarding homosexuality (though it seems that Wilde's tendency towards lower class boys bothered him more than the act itself), but he is very sympathetic to Wilde and stood by him even after he found out that the charges against him were true. He defended Wilde before, during and after the famous trials when it was socially dangerous to do so. He was responsible for getting Wilde better conditions in prison (including books and writing utensils) and petitioned to get Wilde let out early.
He gives a vivid portrait of what Wilde looked like and who he was - he didn't appear to have an axe to grind, just a desire to record the man for posterity. If nothing else, its worth the price. I would consider this required reading for any Wilde fan.

A must for Oscar fans. I thought I was getting the bigger edition with all the letters, but that was my fault. I'll buy that one as well in time.

One cannot improve upon the remarks fore-mentioned of George Bernard Shaw's. Long before public figures of no talent were thrust upon us, literate minds instead of marketeers gathered around the chosen few as johnny-come-latelys and would rarely disappoint. This is a thrilling, gripping read.Style, tact and endless grace in words for a tragic, painful public artist run throughout this personal account.Much can be gained from savoring this moment in time if one aspires celebrity and fame and wants to avoid its dizzying pitfalls.

This happens to be a very nice edition of carefully selected poetry collection by Oscar Wilde, the end-of-the-19th-century Romantic English poet and playwright. I was specifically looking for "The Sphinx", a not-easy-to-find poem at all - and the "Selected Poems" had it. Before I went ahead and placed my order I had actually asked the seller if the collection had it and the kind lady went to the trouble of going through the table of contents to let me know it was there all right. - A very nice edition for a most reasonable price. Quite rewarding! Whole-heartedly and gratefully recommended!
