Lina Bryans - unconventional, generous and beautiful - was an influential artist of the modernist movement in Australia, and a key player in the cultural life of Melbourne. Often overlooked in her own time, Bryans is now being recognised as a significant figure in Australian ar. "Bryans was untrained, and her painting is spontaneous, intuitive and expressive. She was a superb colourist, and brought an abstract lyricism and spirituality to her work, reinterpreting the Australian landscape.

"The life and work of portrait and landscape painter Lina Bryans is revealed in this biography. The book situates Bryans in the context of the Modernist movement of the 1920s, which introduced Paul CTzanne and Post-Impressionism to the conservative Melbourne art establishment. Bryans is revealed as an individualist who refused to be allied with either the George Bell school or the ReedsÆ Heide group and who developed her own intuitive and expressive style. A critical assessment of Bryans's style and discussion of the range and social significance of her works are included."
